I actually read this online at Charles Watson’s ministry website Abounding Love. Link.

This book, to me, is of three basic parts. The pure evil and brainwashing that the Manson Family endured and then inflicted onto others, and then pure redemption on the part of, in this case, one member. Finally, even though his heart may be changed, Watson must still face the consequences of what he has done.

I have read Helter Skelter at least once, maybe twice, I’m not sure. I’ve read Susan Atkins’ book, as well. Yet, it seems to me, that this book by Charles Watson is more extensive, at least at the point I am currently at (chapter 12), into the brain of Manson. I am convinced the murders were an unadulterated scheme set in place by him for months or even years before. I am convinced Manson was possessed. With the help of drugs, he was so easily able to control “his” people. Watson talks of Charlie’s ability to talk many people into a variety of things, even when having just met them. To some, he was a Christ. To many he could have been an anti-christ. To others, he was just a joke. But no matter how the world saw him, he was a man of incredible evil.

There is really not much I can say that has not already been said. The whole world that has access to things like the internet and television has heard of the Manson murders. I encourage anyone who is interested or otherwise so inclined to read the version of Charles Watson. However, here, as I think of them, I might write some things that stood out at me…

– Maybe I had forgotten but I don’t think I had any idea that Watson actually met Manson through Beach Boy Dennis Wilson. What a strange turn of events.

– In this book, Watson says that Charlie told him to take the girls to the place where Terry Melcher “used to live.” If I remember correctly, in the book Helter Skelter, Vincent Bugliosi leaves it at saying that maybe Manson didn’t know Melcher had moved and wanted to extract revenge on him [Melcher] for his [Manson] not getting a record deal, etc. But Manson apparently knew full well that Melcher had moved to Malibu and still wanted everyone in that house, whoever may be there, to die. Just more proof, that even though they didn’t know the people in the house, that the location on Cielo Drive was not a random one.

– Watson gives another reason for the Tate murders, besides any possible revenge, or starting “Helter Skelter”: money was needed to bail out Mary Brunner from jail. They needed $600, in fact.

– I am just completely blown away about Dean Morehouse. This guy was a real piece of work.

– Watson gives us more insight into what Manson’s “Helter Skelter” really was. Again, if I remember correctly, in the book by Bugliosi, it doesn’t seem as if he really understood it or knew all the “facts” about it. The same with Susan Atkins. Watson gives a lot of “sources” that Manson took to support his crazy ideas.

– Concerning Susan Atkins, in this book, Watson states that she neither stabbed Sharon Tate nor tasted her blood like she claimed in the early days of the trials and onward. He states that she was just looking for attention (which was a pattern throughout the book concerning her) and that her testimony before the grand jury which was later denounced, was the truest of all her testimonies. However, Watkins does not mention anything about Susan wanting to take Sharon Tate’s baby with them. In fact, he says that he did not realize, probably because of the drugs and situation, that she was even pregnant at all until after the other three had been killed (or were near death).
