hmmm… what?
Okay, people, just because you found this page by Googling “North American Handico” does not mean that this is Handico’s website! In fact, it’s not! Their website is handico.net. If you have issues with them, feel free to leave a comment about that, but please do not harass me via comments or my contact form, I have nothing to do with this company! Please read the post in its entirety as this will further that thought!
Normally I wouldn’t have looked into this call, but when I said I wasn’t interested, I was rather rudely hung up on, so I did some Googling.
A few minutes ago, I received a call from (303) 233-3912, from someone calling themselves North American Handico. The woman on the line spoke slowly and clearly, where I could understand her, I’ll give her that. She stated that they were not a charity but that they were a place that employs handicapped people and they sell products. That right there means they can’t call me as I’m on every no-call list known to mankind. If they’re selling stuff and I’m not already a customer, as far as I’m aware, they cannot call me. (Can you tell I’m currently in a bad mood? I’m sick today. Blah.) Their website, even if in round-about ways, refers to themselves as telemarketers.
Anyway, I didn’t want to be rude, so I listened to what she had to say. She stated that though you can get these “various items” from your local store, they can send them to you and let you check them out before you pay. Not only have I never heard of these people before, but I really don’t have any money right now, nor do I have need for anything right now, honestly. So I politely tell her that I am just not interested right now. She then hung up on me! Not even a “thank you for your time”!
Their website is apparently handico.net and… The title on the main page? 404. The design? It makes my eyes hurt. Anyway, their website claims they sell light bulbs that will not burn out or break for 10 years, trash bags, zip lock bags, air fresheners, all purpose cleaners, cookies, and greeting cards. Suddenly I see how they make money… $39.95 for five pounds of cookies? $39.95 for 50-75 trash bags? Wow.
Now, I’m sure this is a good company and I’m not trying to put anyone down here. But what is bothering me here, is the whole telemarketing thing. We all know how I hate hate hate unsolicited phone calls. I am on no-call lists, there is no reason I should be getting phone calls about this. Furthermore, people around the internet are reporting many many more calls with hangups, and even early morning calls and the name of the company was blocked from my callerID (just the number was visible).
The website gives their no-call policy as such:
WE ONLY WANT TO SPEAK TO YOU IF YOU ARE INTERESTED WITH OUR COMPANY. IF YOU ANY REASON YOU ARE DISSATISFIED OR SIMPLY ARE TIRED OF THE PHONE CALLS IT IS VERY SIMPLE TO STOP. ALL WE ASK IS THAT YOU EMAIL US AT MNEWBURG1@MSN.COM OR CALL OUR TOLL FREE NUMBER AND WE WILL BE HAPPY TO REMOVE YOU FROM OUR CALLING LISTS. PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR PHONE NUMBER WITH AREA CODE. WE APRECIATE ALL YOUR HELP AND OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE SATISFIED CUSTOMERS THAT WANT TO HEAR FROM US.
I mean, that just really raises a lot of red flags for me. That’s it, too, word-for-word, all caps, “APRECIATE” and all. I would think that a company that’s been in business since 2005 and that has a website would at least have an email address routed through said website. MSN, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, or other free account addresses associated as a business’s main email address always strike me strange. But the second sentence in that quote really stands out at me: if for any reason you are simply tired of our phone calls, let us know! How about… don’t call people who are on no-call lists? There’s a reason these people are on those lists, and most of those people aren’t going to want to voluntarily verify their phone numbers (not to mention their email addresses) with you!
Okay, enough ranting about annoying calls.

The non-domain MSN.com email address to address complaints to is also way unprofessional!

Can’t the BBB or someone official be notified about this kind of reprehensible activity? I mean, jeeze, there’s got to be some kind of rules and regulations in place to make sure this kind of crap doesn’t crap up our lives.
Deja vu.
Anyways, good for you for getting ticked and doing research. That makes everything good. LOL!

These people have been calling us for at least 15 years, we have never made a purchase from them. I have told them repeatedly not to call. I too am on the no call list.
I think it is past time to put a stop to their harrassment.

I just got this number a few minutes ago. I don’t mind the phone calls, if there is somebody really there, but I HATE either recorded messages telling me to call back, or hangups. We do get some calls from bill collectors that are legit, but I’ll never pay them if they have a recording.
But these idiots hung up on me, and I hate that.

Yeah hangups are very annoying.
@ Laurie — you’ll have to go to the website where you signed up for the no call and then look for a link to report. For the federal it’s https://www.donotcall.gov/Complain/ComplainCheck.aspx

DO some research these ***** call themselves five 9 company. They list several areas of service. Some of those areas of service are Debit Procurement Corp., Emarald Mortgage, and ALVA Pacific just to name a few. Check out their services and you will learn a little about federal laws that they have to ha ha go by. They get around these little items with a few tricks up their sleeves. They are a call center full of ***** services and sleeze balls to match. Find out how the 2 second rule applies to them and the federal law.
I was a collector and know that there are issues to be addressed with collections but I would just as soon loose the roof over my head than to drive some on these people who have really fallen on hardtime to commit suicide. There are individuals that have fallen through the cracks and do not know how to get help so by all means keep on harrassing them until they break or better yet YOU DO MS/MR COLLECTOR.
God Bless to those who are in need and do not know how to get out. And God Bless to those who have chosen to kick them when they are down and out.

I also got this call and as I probed for more information the accent or “slowness” of her speech slowly went away. It’s very possible that this “slow” speech was faked to mimic a person with a speech issue, it had an almost cadence to it that seemed rehearsed. I was very kind and asked several questions, as she answered she began talking at a normal pace and tone not the “practiced” first call voice. This made me VERY suspicious and thus told her to have a nice day and that I wasn’t interested. She said thank you and that was it.

Did anyone else look at things online that have to deal with disabilities?

I am not saying this company is legit, and I just received a call myself (which is how I found this website), but if these people are slow — wouldn’t you think they would read slow as well? Once they are done reading the intro script they would be more likely to speak faster.

Also been on the No Call List since inception & I have a REAL problem with companies that ignore it. This is FEDERAL LAW! It is THEIR responsibility to comply with the List & NOT our job to request removal from their list! Their Website is SO unprofessional, I find it hard to believe they are really a registered charity! Off to report them I go & suggest anyone else getting their calls do the same! And Caller ID showed the call from 303- 233-3912, but a recording says that number is disconnected!
How UNPROFESSIONAL can this company be?!?!

I got a call from them and I too was sceptical. I Googled the Tri-County Workforce Center in Jefferson County and spoke to Jessica Aragon to check them out. She said they are a legit business that provides employment and training opportunities to individuals with disabilities. They are working on getting 501(c)3 status as a charity so that purchases are tax deductable. I commented that their prices concerned me and she said the organization uses the profits to both pay the workers and to offer services and training to the workers. She said she has referred people to them and considers them a very positive organization.
Also – about the concerns that you cannot call back the originating phone number. I worked selling Call Center systems and I can tell you that it is very common that a telemarketing call centers will have a setup that is primarily for out-bound calls. They may have 15 or 20 outgoing call lines and only a few for incoming calls.
So, those folks are real disabled people who are really working to earn money and learn skills. Kudo’s to them!!!

I did file my No Call complaint on 8/6 & guess what…. Since they are FILED as a non-profit, they do NOT have to abide by the No Call List at all!
Again, I am fully in favor of helping the handicapped, BUT I believe they should be required to show the company name AND originating number on Caller ID. At least that way when an individual wants to complain, they know who to contact & how to reach them. And I think the guidelines to the No Call List must be changed to include this. As it is now, if they file as a non-profit, it appears they can do pretty much whatever they want in regards to telemarketing.
And does everyone here know each No Call Registration expires at 5 years? We have to re-file our numbers, which should be publicized more. It will be a NASTY surprise to many when they start being flooded with telemarketing calls again!

This company is a non-profit company (the reason you still get calls from them even though you are on the no-call lists), employing handicapped people. Most of the employees are developmentally disabled, or as some of you apparently call them, “slow”. Unfortunately, because some of them are mentally retarded, they tend to struggle with their temper flaring up when being rejected. I know for a fact though that this company does work very hard on working with those people, and if they have repeated problems, they will terminate their employment. One of my clients works for this company, the only reason I’ve heard of it. Just be patient because this is the only chance some of them have to work and make money because of discrimination, like some of you have shown.

Thanks, Brandy, for your comment. I agree that it’s great that this company employs handicapped people, however, I think most of the people that have commented here have a problem with hangups and repeated calls after being told not to call again, etc. No matter who is employed, this company needs to respect the wishes of the people they are calling. This applies to any company or non-profit organization that is calling people.

My son works for this company. He is developmentally disabled. They are truly wonderful people over there and as the last person wrote, there just needs to be some understanding that we need to accomodate people with disabilities as much as possible. Although I do understand fully why people would wonder about such a call because there are so many scammers out there – and because hang-ups are tough – I just want you to know that the people who run this company are kind people who are doing a great service for our community.

We had purchased products from Handico multiple times. but we now have stopped. We always recognized that the high cost of their products was helping out their employees. But after sending a check for one of their products, we got a call a few weeks later and the person on the line said that they had not received payment.
We looked at our checking account statement, and noted that the check had cleared, and our bank sends us a copy of the actual front of the checks, and it was written out to Handico.
So we called Handico back and told them this. The person who answered said it wasn’t good enough, that we would have to send them a copy of both sides of the check to prove that they had actually received the money. My wife told her that what we had was proof that we’d paid the bill, but the woman said that if we didn’t send them a copy of both sides of the check, they would keep calling us back until we did.
So my wife asked to speak to a supervisor, and while nicer about it, he said that they still needed to see a copy of both sides of the check. It was suggested that they needed to see who signed it. We thought maybe they were concerned that they had an internal control problem.
When I heard this story, I was ready to say “so-long” to Handico, but my wife liked what the company was doing. So we ordered a copy of the check from our bank (which we had to pay a fee to get). When the check came, my wife called Handico and said we now had a copy of both sides of the check, including who had endorsed it. The lady who answered said, “Okay, we don’t need you to do anything with it, everything is fine now.” My wife asked if they wanted to know what was on the back side, or who signed it, and she answered, “No.”
At that point, it was my wife who told the lady that they would never get business from us again.
Notwithstanding that Handico may be trying to train employees, this story indicates that their customer treatment problem is systemic into their management. No customer should be put through this kind of treatment, regardless of merits of the company.

I do not believe that a company that “is working on getting 501(C)3 status as a charity” deserves any special comnsideration. It may be another matter once they achieve it. Any band of scam artists can be described as “working on getting…”
The folks speaking positively about this group may well be a part of the con.
Unless they’ve been granted non-profit status I don’t believe they can ignore the do-not-call list.

My mother who will be 90 got an invoce for something that she ordered. Unfortunately she does not remember ordering it. I call the two numbers listed and get a very nice gentleman who tells me to leave a message and he will call me back when he returns. Same voice. Same message. I’m waiting for the order to come it before there will be any money sent.
Fortunately, she no longer has a credit card and does not have control of her checking account. But we cannot put a control on the phone.

My daughter worked for Handico for about 2 years. I understand your anger if you have had a lot of problems with scammers in the past, but Handico is not a scammer. They do business with about 10,000 people every month, and sometimes inappropriate things occur. The previous post regarding people who are “slow” and do not have good control of their tempers is true. I also know that my daughter has improved tremendously as a result of her work experience at Handico. I am also proud to say that the Tri-County Workforce Center (http://www.jeffcoworkforce.org/) found out about Handico when my daughter was working with the counselor there to get a job and my daughter found the job through a friend. The owner is good-hearted, pays MORE than minimum wage, gives high-performers raises, and takes them on complimentary outings during off-hours. I cannot say enough about them. I am sorry people have had bad experiences. I hope you will look at the big picture, and not assume that the few bad experiences you have had are indicative of the company as a whole.

I buy from Handico every year. They support disabled people, giving them job. They do not lay off people like mulit million dollar corporations are doing. They do not go to the US government asking for a bail out. They charge high prices for their products so they can pay their employees. Often this is the only place there handicapped people can find work …..
I just hung up with a very nice young man. Ordered my usual Kitchen trash bags, which come in a huge roll and it takes months and months to use up. This time I added some zip lock bags to the order, both quart and gallon.
I can’t believe you’ve taken the time and resources to create this page to put them down. Why not put your money and your time into efforts that build people up.

Barbara, what you don’t seem to understand is the issue that people who don’t want to do business with this company have been or are being harassed by these unsolicited phone calls. Unsolicited phone calls, I might add, that are most likely violating state and federal no-call lists. Good company or not (which is subjective), I want nothing to do with them and deserve to be left alone. I don’t care who they employ, this post is not to tear those people down, it is clearly to discuss issues with a company. Furthermore, it didn’t take me any extra money or resources and very little time to write this post up. Don’t try to make me look bad – it’s not going to work – I’m not doing what you are trying to make it look like I’m doing, again, I am speaking against bad practices of the company.

Many of these post sadden me. My 24 year old disabled son works at Handico. This job gives him a way to feel like he is of value, important, and a “normal” person. And hang ups? As much as they are wrong, and rude, can you even guess how many people hang up on my son every day while he is trying to make a living? He already struggles with self-worth and rejection issues. One man, like some on this post, accused my son of being a phoney, and told him he would go to hell for immitating a disabled person. For shame, for shame. I love my son, and I am VERY proud of him. So please the next time he calls asking if you would like to buy some high priced garbage bags, or 10 year light bulbs, kindly purchase them from him, or kindly refuse.

Steve, thanks for your comment. I really do think that it’s great that Handico exists and can employ disabled people. When I originally wrote the post, I was apparently sick and just not feeling well, so I probably came off more witchy than I intended. I have a long track record of getting lots of calls from scammers and companies that violate the no-call lists. I guess it’s because I just can’t make myself be rude to people on the phone, so I’ll sit there and listen to what they say without cutting them off, until I get an opportunity to say “no thank you.” So I tend to “expose” those who called me. But really, it’s nothing against the people – from my point of view – who work there. I have no issue with them and like I said, I am always polite. I just think that companies – all companies – need to follow the laws.
The chances of my being able to afford buying from Handico are very small, but if they decide they want some (free) help with their website, you can point them to my contact form: http://spoken-for.org/emailme/
I apologize if anything I have said has offended anyone, it is never my intention. However, I am not responsible for what anyone else says.

I was so disheartened to find these messages. My 26 year old daughter worked for Handico for about 4 years. I know the owner and I know that Handico is a wonderful company and give people a chance to work when they would not otherwise. I am sorry if some the calls interrupted your dinner or otherwise sparked this rage in you. I certainly understand that it is difficult to deal with people with disabilities. That is my life, and I guess I do not know any different. Consider taking a deep breath and exploring the possibility that you do not know everything based on the phone calls you have unfortunately received.

I just got a call and found this site. After reading all this, I’m thinking… annoying, definitely. Scam… probably not. I used to have a neighbor who was disabled and we never knew what he’d do or say, pretty unpredictable. I think his parents were as surprised as I was at times. I can’t imagine having a bunch of employees like that. If they have one bad incidence a day, every day for all the years they’ve been in business, annoying to that one person a day every day… definitely. However, I’d say that would be success in my book. Just my 2 cents.

David & ladams from Colorado. Yes, I know that you are both the same person. Leaving comments an hour apart from one another doesn’t change the fact that your computer tells me you are one and the same. Personally, I don’t appreciate that and it makes me wonder if anything you say is the truth.
I’m not here to be rude, however, just pointing out that I am not fooled.
I also want to say, and probably for the millionth time, that it does not matter WHO this company employs, it still needs to follow THE LAW. I think it’s great that there are companies that employ handicapped people, I really do, but those companies are companies nonetheless and need to follow the law like everyone else. That is the big point here, and, no, there is no “rage” as you say…
