hmmm… what?
So this might be kinda gross to some. I don’t care. I’m bored. :)
Last Sunday morning I suddenly was unable to hear as good in my right ear. I could hear some still, but everything was way muffled, except my own voice which was about three times as loud as normal.
Ever since the end of November, my ears have been feeling kind of weird. Like I was getting a wax buildup similar to when I was little. I’d been using some drops meant to take care of this, but I guess it didn’t do too well and finally on Sunday, something happened and I definitely felt like something was up against my eardrum or something.
Monday I was extremely extremely extremely busy and I ran out of time. But on Tuesday, on my way home, I just stopped in the doctor’s office at 2.45pm to see if they could get me in, or to make an appointment for Wednesday. Surprisingly, they had an opening at 3, so I grabbed it.
He took a look and my left ear looked good, he said. My right ear was, as he said, “impacted.” Do I want them to wash it out? HECK YES! He asked me something like three times, “have you ever had this done before?” No, no I have not, why do you keep asking me?
Soon enough the nurse comes in with this HUGE syringe looking thing – without a needle, of course. She filled it with warm water, had a towel on my shoulder, and had me hold a little pan below my ear. Then she took that thing and just sprayed water into my ear. I jumped at first because, well, it is kinda shocking, and the water was warmer than I thought it would be, but really it wasn’t all that bad after the first second or two, when I got used to it. Just this constant stream of water going in and other water rushing out.
After the first time, there was a little tiny bit of wax floating in the “used” water, microscopic, really. The second time, it was a HUGE relief. Suddenly I could hear again and the pressure and growing pain was gone. Oh, so nice. And what was floating in the water? A huge piece of wax, like the size of a pea or a bit bigger. I know, gross. I have yet to figure out the purpose of ear wax, anyway.
He took a look again and said that I might have or be getting an infection? Something like that, it was apparently pretty red in there. He prescribed me some drops. These things are annoying, I’m supposed to take two drops three times daily. So far I’ve only done it once, I’m due for another now, and the stupid things are making me feel like that wax is in there again. :( It’s hard for me to do myself, too, I can’t tell if I’m putting in two drops or what. Oh well, that will be over soon enough.
I admire those of you who can’t hear. :) I am not sure I could handle it. Just those couple of days was driving me insane. I mean, I had three computer service calls, the typical directing-editing session, another training session, Bible study, and all that normal everyday stuff, too.
Isn’t it funny how you don’t really notice something until it’s gone?

Good thing it’s improving. Ear pain is one of the worst pains to endure, since it’s so close to the mouth and the brain. I am glad the flushing helped. I hope the ear doesn’t gather any more unwanted material again.
I think the wax will start liquidating [literally, lol] any remaining solids that do not belong in there, so it may feel as if things are building up again. But after a few days of stopping the drops, things should hopefully be all clear.
Good luck!

Oh that doesn’t sound fun at all. I had the worst ear problems when I was little- they stayed pretty “waxy”. Now my son has started pulling at his ears… I hope he doesn’t have the same problems I did. Anyway.. I hope those ear drops help. I know they suck, I can’t stand them either!

Eww, that is pretty gross but then again…. My son has had three ear infections and a throat infection snce he was born. He is 16 months now. I guess we are prone o these things as a infants and later on in life the may come back. I remember when I was young, 8-12 years old, I watched my dad make a funnel, stick the small end into his ear and lit the large end on fire. The fire burned slow and the smoke and heat traveled up the funnel and into his ear canal. He claimed he heard perfectly after doing that. Carribean style medicine. lol.

That is a strange feeling when they flush the ear :D I’ve done it myself, many years ago, but still can remember the strangeness of it all…… Hope it stays clear now!

Here’s something that’s kinda cool – that doctor just called me to see how I was doing! Usually if there’s been a follow-up, it’s been with an appointment or a phone call by a nurse, not the doctor himself. So that was pretty cool.
I’ve been to this guy twice now, he was one of the ones I went to when I was sick back in December.
