hmmm… what?
It really ticks me off when people take advantage of those who don’t know any better.
The other day we got this thing in the mail that says it’s from Saint Matthew’s Churches. This is probably the third time that we’ve gotten this mailing.
The outside of the envelope proclaims, “Two homes are about to be blessed… then it must go to another dear friend.” And, “Yours First!” The postage is non profit organization paid and it was mailed from zip code 52641.
The back reads, “Dear Jesus, we pray that you will bless someone in this home spiritually, physically & financially. And please dear Lord, bless the one who’s hands open this letter. Make good changes in this one’s life and give them the desires of their heart. We pray over and bless this letter in your holy name. Amen.”
Sounds nice… then you get inside…
Let me first say that if you’ve read here very long at all, or even just checked out a few of my pages around here, then you know I am a Christian. However, as you also know, I am not perfect. I am still a work in progress, I often do and say things I shouldn’t. But, I do know when something is a scam and not true Christianity…
So there are three pieces of paper inside the envelope. The first one tells you what to do, the second is a page of “getters” and “testimonials” and the third is a paper rug.
You are told to take this paper rug, about the size of two 8×11.5 sheets of paper, that has a rug printed on it with a picture of Jesus with his eyes closed, and “Look into Jesus’ Eyes you will see they are closed. But as you continue to look you will see His eyes opening and looking back into your eyes. Then go and be alone and kneel on this Rug of Faith or touch it to both knees. Then please check your needs on our letter to you. Please return this Prayer Rug. Do not keep it.”
The back reads, “‘This Prayer Rug is Soaked with the Power of Prayer for you. Use it immediately, then please return it with your Prayer Needs Checked on our letter to you.’ It must be mailed to a second home that needs a blessing after you use it. Prayer works. Expect God’s blessing.”
I am then addressed as “Dear… Someone Connected with This Address,” and the letter proceeds to tell me that this 54 year old church (like that’s such a long time) has sent me this “prayer rug” so that if I do what it says, send it back with a money contribution then I will have all the desires of my heart granted!
Sounds like a chain letter to me. A chain letter that preys on those who claim to be religious, but aren’t really.
So, apparently if I take this little rug (made of paper, I remind you) and kneel on it, or if I’m lazy I can touch it to my knees without kneeling, then I can ask God for $1,000,000,000,000 and He’ll give it to me… all because of this little paper rug.
Riiiiiiiight.
Sorry, people, but paper doesn’t have any power in it, I don’t care what you say.
Oh but, of course, I cannot forget to send in my money contribution to these people, or God won’t answer my requests. Not only is this St. Matthew’s church asking for my money, but they are so cheap that all of the paper in this mailing is the thinnest stuff I’ve ever seen in my life, and you’re not supposed to keep this “rug” thing but send it back so they can give it to someone else.
Oh, I almost forgot about the part where you’re supposed to check off your prayer needs. Here are your options, complete with exact emphasis and punctuation:
___ I received this Church Prayer Rug you loaned me, and I used it as instructed in this letter of faith. Now, I am returning it to you for another to use.
___ Yes, I do need the Lord’s blessings upon my family and me!
Pray for my family and me for…
___ My Soul
___ A Closer Walk With Jesus
___ My Health
___ A Family Member’s Health
___ Confusion In My Home
___ My Children
___ To Stop A Bad Habit
___ A Better Job
___ A Home To Call My Own
___ A New Car
___ A Money Blessing
___ I Want to be Saved.
___ Pray for God to bless me with this amount of money: $______
___ Please, especially pray for this person: ________
___ Also pray for (please print): _________
___ Enclosed is my seed gift to God’s work of $____.
SAINT MATTHEW’S CHURCH MUST HAVE THIS PRAYER RUG BACK. PLEASE DO NOT MISPLACE IT. IT MUST GO TO ANOTHER HOME AFTER YOU USE IT.
Um… okay.
Okay, “my soul” – sure, that’s a good thing to request prayer for, or “a closer walk with Jesus” or “my children,” etc. But the things that really stand out at me are some of the last options.
“Pray for God to bless me with this amount of money…”
Right. God is not a piggy bank!! That is one of the most selfish things I have ever seen. A true home that follows Him will not need to request a specific amount of money, all their needs will be cared for.
Oh of course, there’s the “I want to be saved” box as well. Sure, that’s good… but why is it almost last on the list? Shouldn’t something like that be first? This alone shows me that this “church” only cares about the money. Scam!!
And we mustn’t forget the “testimonials” thing. It says things like…
“…my husband listed 7 things that he wanted God to do for him… God blessed us with $10,700. He went out and bought us a car… enclosed is a donation…”
“…after I received your prayer package I was healed of severe pains…”
and more like that.
All because of a piece of paper. Right.
Remember how I mentioned that the mailing came from zip code 52641? Well, you’re supposed to send it back to 74121… hmmm…
I just really have a problem with those who seek to prey off of the fears and insecurities of others, especially when using religion. It’s not “organized religion” that’s the problem, it’s the wolves in sheep’s clothing…
No, a piece of paper or a ritual – neither of them have any power, and those who would lead you to believe otherwise, are lying.
I am considering mailing this back… without the precious prayer rug that must be sent to other families, of course. Let them pay for the postage. Scammers.
After getting this packet the other day, I did search these guys out on the internet and all I found was reports from the likes of the better business bureau and bloggers who all added to my beliefs that this is a scam. The only websites for Saint Matthew’s churches that I found are real churches that are named St. Matthew and not affilliated with these people. Of course, I could tell you more about this actual organization, but I think I’m going to leave off now…

Hey, I need some cash – If you’re not gonna use that rug…
And… But if this rug is so empowered with prayer that it can bring you money, then why doesn’t the church use it instead of asking for donations? You’d think they’d want to keep that thing around, you know, in case they need to buy another hit of the dope they’re smoking.
(Ack! Pink! /me, blinded, searches for the “bathboy” icon.)

I agree with Owen, when they have the power of God to give to youwhy not use it themselves? Although I don’t practice religion, I still believe in a higher power, and, on another note, on sending mass mailings back, I always feel wrong writing “return to sender, payment on delivery” on credit card applications, but someone has to do it, right?

I wish I knew what the actual artwork was called, to begin to debunk the various misuses of such a neat artistic feat. I just received a “Forward” nearly proclaiming the effect as divine, but I can’t find any reputable references to it, and have even seen two totally different depictions (one painting, one statue!) – the closest reputable source is a Reuters link that now shows a polar-bear video instead of “The eyes of God?” as advertised: >http://today.reuters.com/tv/videoChannel.aspx?storyid=1bf27dd70bfa3549751241044f9d080a846c87b5

Thanks for stopping by, DSR. And I have to say hmmm, because when I looked at that link you posted, I saw the video of the painting.
They talk about viewing it up close and seeing eyes closed and viewing it further away and seeing the eyes open. Strange indeed but merely an optical illusion…

I just go the letter today and was disgusted! I am sure that sadly, there are many out there who will fall for this baloneyand send in money! There are so many things that are wrong in this letter!! The part about putting it under your bed, but not for more than one night because God will know! Oh wow! I really doubt that if you do follow through and put the piece of paper under your bed that God will be mad if you leave it there TWO nights!!!
Anyways, I looked up “Saint Matthews Church Prayer Rugs” and found several links to their website – which lists several FAQs about the rug. Such as “What if I don’t want to use it?” “Just dispose of it.”
It is so sad that people like this are allowed to mislead others! I know that freedom of speech is great, but scamming people out of $$ in God’s name is another thing!

I too received the letter and the prayer rug today. It is unbelievable to me what people will do to scam money. I believe chain letters are illegal and this scam should be stopped.

i shredded my letters, then packed it down into the rug – still folded (and there is an optical illusion that one can see if you peer at the printing over his eye lids closely. the printing dots are arranged to appear as two obscured iris and pupils. much like a ‘magic eye’ painting, the eyes ‘open’ if stared at long enough.) then fitted it all nicely back into the envelope they so generously provided. i’m sitting on it now, so the shreds will compress.
and by the way, was that the worst jesus picture you’d ever seen anwyay?
he’s got like, butt-chin.

I recieved the prayer “rug” this week. I am disgusted. My mother is almost in a panic trying to decide what to do with this thing. It’s not that either of us are supersticious, but we both know that if we toss it anything bad that happens to us in the next thirty years we will attribute it to the damn chain letter. Oops, I mean prayer rug. OY!
It’s praying on human psychology. The veiled threats, dangling goodies in front of your face, the “what if’s” and “what if I don’t's?” …ad infinitum, ad nauseum.
I find this the most sickening type of scam.
By the way, I found a website for “St matthew’s Churches. It has a whole page devoted just to this letter-I wonder why?!?!?! They say all sorts of nasties about us. They liken people who naysay the letter to Communists, atheists, drug dealers, etc..
So I guess if you don’t believe that your relationship with God can improve by kneeling on paper “likenesses” of Jesus and sending checks to who knows where with requests for big piles of cash for yourself in return then you’re a communist druggie or some such.
These people need to be investigated.

I am glad to have gone online and done some research on this “Rug Letter Prayer Next Morning Blessings” scam only to find more justification to my reasonings. I burned the “thing”!
Jesus God Prayers Faith… does not have a price, “It” does however have much value to many of us; and price & value should not be confused. And to put a time frame on this??? We all know God has more patience with us than anyone in the World, He makes us feel at ease, not desprate not in a rush or hurry in order to hear our prayers. WHAT’S UP PEOPLE ! HOW CAN WE MAKE THE REST SNAP OUT-OF-IT ?
THIS TYPE OF SCAM IS DISGUSTING!!!

I filled this whole letter out but couldnt send it in good faith. The Lord and I have a personal relationship without receiving spam/scam mail. What disturbed me the most was the part about Paul who sent these hankerchiefs and healed many ppl in the lords name. These ppl in my humble opinion (I hope I am wrong) are using the Lord and Paul as pawns, which should disturb all christians. Even the christian who is in a work in progress (Like me) or being reborn in the Lords name. This church cannot make promises of money or wealth of any means in Jesus name or the Apostle Paul. I will finish with these remarks, No church is infallible, perfect or fully correct in their teachings but some are much worse then others.
God bless you all. Do not be afraid to voice your opinion at church. Some of the greatest religios reformers were not ashamed to speak their minds and use a lil profanity to get the point across when seeing great abomanations, I am speaking of Martin luther. Sorry for the long rant.

I think alot of people are overreacting. I was not offended or horrified in the least at finding the letter/rug from St. Matthews little old church. It was a heck of alot better then finding solication for something like Playboy magazine. Also, I didn’t read anything “demanding” money or stating that my “donation” would insure that my prayers would be answered. People really need to learn to relax and quite taking things out of context.
Has anyone thought that the whole deeper meaning behind the prayer rug coming into YOUR life, may just have been a gentle reminder to reaffirm some faith in prayer, or simply to remind you/us of the need to pray more diligently?
Scam or not, a few minutes of diligent prayer and/or a small donation never hurt anyone.
Let Brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Hebrews: 13:1-2

Well, Celeste, I have to disagree with you a bit…
While a lot of what you have said can be true, the thing that really stands out at me is where you said, “Scam or not, a few minutes of diligent prayer and/or a small donation never hurt anyone.”
Plainly: it is beyond me why anyone would want to donate to a scam!
My conscience would never allow me to donate money to something I don’t believe in. And I really do not believe that this church or letter or whatever is truly of the Lord, for the reasons I’ve already stated in my original post.
No, I will donate to a cause or church that teaches what I believe in and that I have found to be reputable.

I just got this letter in the mail today and it really freaked me out. I’m a Catholic and at first I thought it was one of those many mailings I get with Mass cards, medals, etc., but then when I was reading it, I thought the Catholic church wouldn’t do this. There was a blog on Snopes.com about it too. I’m going to show this to one of our church’s deacons and get his/her opinion. Like I said, it was freaky.

I recieved the e-mail today (i was laughing so hard I was about to die) My bible teacher showed us something like this at school, but on this one you were sopposed to write someones name on it that you wanted to be blessed. Then pray for them and put the paper under your bed on top of your bible. After this yiou were supposed to send the paper baxk with at least 10 dollars in it or it said that the person you wanted to be blessed would be damned to hell!!1
For one this is the most ridiculus thing I have ever heard of.
And two why would someone even want to do it after reading that their friend might be damned to hell. duhh!!!(: what kind of idiots are they.

Got one of these in the mail – my husband and I are not Catholics, but we are law abiding citizens. I took one look at the back and said “This is an actual chain letter!” I’ve gotten chain email (usually promising to reveal your crush if you send it to 4123 people in 5 minutes) but this is the first time I’ve gotten a physical chain letter.
I’m taking it up to the postmaster tomorrow. Hopefully, they’ll handle it better than the one at my ISP.

I also just received this letter. I read it and the instructions seem strangely like a chain letter, and I didn’t want these people if they are in fact scammers to have my address. The idea isn’t bad though, to send people prayer letters and it dosn’t matter if the rug is paper. Faith is the big thing with God. Using the rug and praying on it will not hurt you but God isn’t going to not bless you for not following these instructions.

Just got one of these today. Even the envelope set off my “woah this is weird” alarm even before I opened it. A quick google found this site, among others, confirming my belief that this is nothing but a scam…
The weird thing is that in my quick skimming of the letter, they really didn’t ask for money much. I read elsewhere that this comes later, after they get your reply and place you into their “sucker” file…
I’m very much a Christian but a scam is a scam

Today I received another, too!
This time they will be getting it back, with a note, and a shredded rug. :P :)

Hi, Val
I just got the same letter with the “prayer rug”. I think I’ll send a letter in their envelope demanding they never contact me again. (Why waste a stamp when I could use it for an actually LEGITIMATE business?). While I am not particularly religious, and honestly not that interested, this kind of thing goes against all I have ever been told of God and Christ. I would like to stop them altogether, but I’m sure whoever started this garbage made sure their legal bases were completely covered, giving little recourse. I found this entry by Googling “Saint Matthew’s Churches scam” and you were the first listing. I also looked at Wikipedia’s entry on the “church”. How interesting that the founder lives in Beverly Hills and has helped Oral Roberts, whom I have had a big problem with since I was 8 or 9 and he did his Million-Dollar stunt. I don’t have a problem with Christianity in its own right (or any other mainstream religion), but I do have a problem with such blatant abuse of it.

ehhh. I just simply sent it back with no money, of course. A little prayer never hurt anyone. Maybe this will get some non- believers to pray, and that’s certainly not a bad thing. However, just DON’T SEND MONEY. And chances are, if you’re praying for the money, you don’t have it to send anyway!

Well, I did no research on the church (which is unusual for me), but because I’d just been sent $5 for doing a Nielsen survey I decided to enclose that money with the stuff they requested I return to them for my blessing. While I saw no particular power with what I was asked to do, I had enjoyed completing the survey and didn’t feel I should be paid (though I suppose I could’ve sent the money back to them) so I figured passing it on would be best, knowing that God sees to it that we all get our just rewards. It hasn’t even been a week but I’ll let you know!

i received their first letter with the cross and I carry it everyday. In a way,it helped me,because all my prayers were answered when I started carrying this cross and good things has been happening to me lately. But it’s up to God to punish those people if this is really a scam. I leave it up all to Him,who is the sole judge of all things. I received the 2nd letter with the purple marker, and I started to have doubts, because they are already asking money. in the first letter, they were saying that they were not asking money, but now why are they asking it? well it doesn’t heart to send them a quarter, coz they did not specify any amoount anyway. I disagree with you on that. It’s true that “vengeance is mine, saith the Lord,” but as Christians we aren’t to turn a blind eye to what is wrong by any means. This St. Matthew’s “church” is a deceiver, a wolf in sheep’s clothing, why should they not be exposed?

I received one letter today. It sounds really nice like you said at first too. And this one was about sending us a “free golden cross”.. looking pretty expensive like a real jewelries. But like u said… it gave testimonies of a lot of ppl and said that God gave them money and bless their finances.
I’m not Christianity. But I’ve learned that “God only gives you what makes you happy”. But then this stupid things are all about MONEY. I gave it a search and apparently their websites were DOWN. So I google it and there we go. It’s just a scam!
